Excerpts from my recent interview with Chelsea Ann-Marie Jones...

Miss Chelsea Ann- Marie Jones, age 13 from Teaneck, NJ!

Chelsea’s earliest remembrance of performing: “I remember at around three or   four years old I took up one of my toy microphones and started dancing and singing to Whitney Houston`s song “I will always love you” in front of my family and family friends. My dad even videotaped it. “
Since then she has:
-  Won at the Apollo amateur night twice in 2009.
-  Is also involved with pageantry.
- Won Bergen County Kreative kidz USA in 2008.
- Then went on to win the nationals for Kreative kidz .
- Won in the Talent America Competition in 2009.
- This year, she came in as 2nd runner up in the Hal Jackson’s Talented Teen’s competition and was awarded the Showstopper award for her singing performance in this pageant.
- Has been on the honor roll at my school in Teaneck, NJ for the past several years.
- Most recently, won the biggest competition so far in her career…. National High School Idol!
In her spare time she loves to draw fashion designs, read, sing, choreograph dances to her favorite songs, act and play different characters in front of the bathroom mirror!
Chelsea said, “I love all types of music. I just love music altogether. But the type of music I sing is mostly gospel, jazz, inspirational, and musical theatre. My favorite song would have to be “The Greatest Love of All” by Whitney Houston because I love the words of the song. They are beautiful lyrics with a beautiful message. The vocals are out of this world. Whitney Houston had a powerful voice and a great range. My favorite Artist would have to be Jennifer Hudson because she has a powerful belting voice [like me!], she has a great range. What I also admire about Jennifer is that she knows how to tone her voice down into a sweet sounding voice and then she knows how to LET IT ALL OUT!!!! "
Her thoughts on NHS Teen Idol:" My best experience at NHSCA teen idol was the workshops. I say that because I learned a lot of things about the entertainment field at the workshops. I met a lot of people who were striving towards the same thing I was striving for.  I also broke out of my “shell” when we did the skits and the song. After that activity, I became more relaxed and comfortable on stage!” and, “ My favorite part of National High school Idol was meeting people who would like to be in the field that I’d love to be in. It’s good to become friends with people who have the same interests as you! My phonebook on my cell phone got two times bigger after meeting all of those people.”
The story behind her nickname:"My family and friends usually call me “Chelly”. It’s a name I inherited when I was younger. When I was younger I used to hate that name! You see, my family is originally from Jamaica, and when they said “Chelly”, they said it with an accent. I thought having an accent was weird because I saw the parents of the kids at my school  and they didn’t have accents. One day my dad picked me up early from school and he said, “Chelly”. I was so embarrassed. All of the other kids looked at my dad like he was weird. I just packed up my stuff and walked out of the room with my head down. When we got outside I pleaded to my dad not to call me “Chelly” in front of my friends because I didn’t want anyone to think I was Jamaican. He ignored my plea. Eventually, throughout the years I started to become proud of my culture. Right now, I can’t  imagine myself without my Jamaican culture!”
This is funny, she tried to cut first grade! “This happened when I was six years old. I had just started first grade and found the days too long. I came up with what I thought was a clever story to let the teacher send me home. My mother has always worn contacts since I have known her. I thought the best way to get sent home was to tell my teacher that I lost my contact – the one from the left eye. The teacher called my mom and told her my story. My mom was confused. She told the teacher that I did not wear contacts. Needless to say she was a little annoyed about me lying, but she also found it funny.”
Her goals are to be on Broadway and to be an actress and singer on TV and in movies. She would also like to become rich and famous. Reason being, “I would like to be rich and famous is that I would be in a position to give to less fortunate people and also speak on their behalf.”
Currently for Chelsea, “I am enjoying my summer vacation. I am currently taking sewing classes. I have always wanted to learn how to sew. It’s a great skill to develop. I am also doing sewing classes to bring my fashion designs to life! Besides sewing classes, I am volunteering at my mom’s job. It is a childcare center and I am working with the children. I am working with the 2 year olds. People may think that working with 2 year olds is difficult but to me it’s a piece of cake. I also have the smartest 2 year olds in the world so it’s easy to teach them and for them to behave!”
“I play the piano. I have been playing for 3 years now and I have learned a lot about the piano during those three years.”
“I am continuing my voice lessons. My voice teacher is the best!  I am learning more and more and expanding my voice even more with her help. I am also singing on my church’ youth choir. I sing at different churches and events. I am also interested in singing for charity events.”
Chelsea is also another one of our teens who writes wonderfully, hence all the quotes!
“My biggest influence would have to be Michael Jackson. I say that because he had so much energy on stage and was a very great singer. Even though I never met him and he never met me, I learned a lot of things  from him; things such as, captivating the audience, giving 100 percent at each performance, being yourself on stage, and having a good attitude at all times.. All of the above explains Michael Jackson as a person. I was devastated at his sudden death but his music and his spirit will always live in my soul. "
“I am a huge fan of my mother! I say that because she is a loving person, she is very supportive, she will tell you the truth no matter what, and she is so helpful. I really admire her. She is the example of what I’d like to be when I get older. My mom is a rock star!”
“My biggest fan(s) would have to be my family. I say that because they are always routing for me (I Don’t think they really have a choice), they always give me advice, and no matter what the circumstances are they will still rout for me and still love me!”
Finally, “I’d like to be remembered for being the 13 year old girl who had the big voice and who went on to do great things. with her talents. I’d be honored to take that title.”

Oh! And let’s not forget who told her about NHS Teen Idol:
Mrs. Janet Brown knew me since I first started out with my music career. She has always looked out for opportunities for me, so she informed me about the High School Teen Idol competition.”
MY GOD! Is there anything Chelsea doesn’t do? I just wanted to let you know, now being a member of her extended phonebook; I’ve gotten to know Rock Star Mom and the Jones Family. They are some of the nicest people I have met in my life! - Alicia
To Chelsea, from your NHS Teen Idol Family, we are so happy you broke out of your shell. Your title of being 13 with a big voice has already been achieved! We know you will go on to do GREAT things and “We will always love you!”
