2010 Finalist Kristina Perez!
Excerpts from my recent interview with Kristina Perez...
Ms. Kristina Perez, now 17 resides in Westfield, NJ. She was our NHS Teen Idol Female Vocal Runner-Up in 2009! Music is her passion, her favorite singers are Christina Aguilera (all time favorite) and Kelly Clarkson. Obsessed with Kelly Clarkson, she went to her concert and sang every single song along with her. Clarkson is a huge inspiration for Kristina!
I asked Kristina what her earliest memory of performing was, she said, “This is kind of funny. When I was really little, about 4 or 5, I was on stage in a dance recital and I had drank a lot of water beforehand and really wanted to run offstage to the bathroom, but was too busy watching everyone else dance. So I kept dancing because I loved the audience so much, then ran off stage really fast when I was done.”
Another funny story she told me was, “Well, I have two older brothers. When I was little as far back as I can remember I used to sing all the time. My brothers used to make fun of me and tell me to be quiet. My mom told me that if singing made me happy, I could sing anytime and never listen to anyone who told me not to sing, especially my brothers. I guess she created a monster, because I haven’t stopped since.”
One of her main goals is to become a famous singer (of course), but she also wants to travel, learn about business and help others as much as she can.
Her best experience at the NHS Teen Idol Event was meeting new people that had the same hunger and passion for performance as she does. She said, “It’s great to surround yourself with people who have the same goal as you and a little healthy competition doesn’t hurt either. " And of course let’s not forget the highly sought after prize of being the runner-up in the 2009 NHS Teen Idol Event.
Kristina has won a Mikkie award for Best Female Featured Actress. Was in the top 7 at the Apollo Theater in NYC. Also, won her high schools version of American Idol, and won second place in their Variety Show, she does a lot of theatre and thinks of every show as an accomplishment and does lots of benefits and fundraisers.
She told me “I have two huge influences. I loved watching Christina Aguilera’s story about how she became famous and how she just worked hard through every single setback. But a huge influence for me every day is my mom. She’s a single mom so I think she has shown me independence and responsibility. I learn something new from her everyday and she’s my best friend.”
She is currently doing demos for other songwriters. She is also a Junior in high school, working on college applications and searching for whatever scholarships she can get.
Kristina’s biggest fan is her Mom. She supports her nonstop and never gets sick of it. She goes to every single show even if Kristina has the smallest role on the planet; she was always in the audience for her and still is today.
Kristina said “Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share my experiences with you.”
